A message from

Juana Gonzalez, MSN, RN
Associate Chief Administrative Officer, Director of Nursing and Clinical Practice

2025 was one of progress and innovation for nursing at the Kaiser Permanente Fremont Medical Center. Our teams have continued to elevate patient care while strengthening collaboration and deepening our ties with the community we serve.

A key highlight was the work of our Gastroenterology (GI) Department, where nurses led the implementation of the Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation (SBAR) communication framework. In a fast-paced environment, this structured tool provided clarity and consistency for nurse-to-nurse handoffs. It reduced miscommunication, improved teamwork across shifts, and gave staff greater confidence in the accuracy of reports. Nurses reported feeling more supported and less overwhelmed, and patient experience survey scores reflected stronger perceptions of teamwork and communication. To further improve efficiency, the department also introduced a Round Robin workflow in procedural suites, which created predictable rotations and smoother patient flow. This model reduced downtime, strengthened continuity of care, and provided patients with a more seamless experience.

Our Emergency Department (ED) teams continued to demonstrate that their impact extends beyond clinical care. In August, nurses organized the annual Back-to-School Backpack Drive, ensuring local children had the supplies needed to start their school year prepared and supported. This long-standing tradition highlights the dedication of our nurses to caring for patients within our walls as well as for the broader community. At the same time, ED nurses launched an initiative to better support pediatric patients by introducing Oculus Virtual Reality (VR) headsets during procedures such as IV starts and laceration repairs. This innovative tool has helped children feel less anxious, reduced stress for families, and created a more positive overall care experience.

Together, these initiatives illustrate the creativity, compassion and professionalism of our nursing teams. Their work continues to advance patient-centered care, foster a supportive work environment, and build trust in our community. I am proud to stand alongside such dedicated colleagues, whose commitment sets the stage for continued growth and transformation in the years ahead.

With this foundation, we are poised to achieve even greater milestones in nursing excellence and to shape the future of care at the Fremont Medical Center.
