A nurses’ journey to national board certification

Jolly Samuel, BSN, RN shares her personal journey to obtaining the Critical Care Registered Nurse national board certification.

I have been a nurse since 1989 and have dedicated my life to bedside nursing. I believe my purpose was to be a nurse and to serve others with compassion. Bedside nursing has always been my calling, the place where I find meaning and connection.

I chose to become an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse to seek new challenges, more autonomy, and a deeper understanding of nursing care. Three years into ICU practice, I decided to take on the challenge of Critical Care Registered Nurse certification.

Preparing for the exam was not easy — it pushed me to study deeply, to connect theory with practice, and to broaden my critical thinking. What made the journey even more meaningful was the encouragement and support I received from my peers.

Passing the test was more than just earning a credential. It gave me confidence, a sense of accomplishment, and a renewed commitment to excellence in patient care. I learned that true growth comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone and embracing the challenges that once felt intimidating.

To me, this accomplishment represents more than a credential. It reflects my dedication to patients, and my unwavering belief in the calling of nursing. Becoming certified has shown me that learning never ends, and every step forward not only sharpens our practice but also deepens the impact we have on the lives we touch.

Certification is proof that growth is possible at any stage of your journey. If you’ve been thinking about it, take the leap. You’ll discover new confidence, a renewed passion for nursing, and a stronger connection to the purpose that first called you to this profession.
