Caring beyond medicine: Care Cart helps minds stay active

The Care Cart at the Fremont Medical Center is a volunteer-led program operating 2 shifts a day, 7 days a week offering patients brain stimulating activities that help prevent delirium and contribute to a more positive hospital experience.

Delirium is a common and serious risk for older adults in the hospital, leading to increased complications and longer stays.  The goal of Care Cart is to offer early, non-pharmacological interventions to prevent and/or manage delirium. Activities offered include puzzles, games, conversation prompts, art supplies and other cognitively engaging tools.

Launching soon: Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) to enhance care for older patients

Plans are underway to implement the HELP program, a proven, multidisciplinary initiative designed to prevent functional decline and delirium in hospitalized older patients.  The program will operate daily with trained volunteers to improve patient safety, comfort, and overall hospital experience for older adults.

What to expect: A dedicated team of trained volunteers will provide daily support targeting delirium risk patients.

Core activities: The trained volunteers will be able to offer additional assistance with mobility assistance and feeding assistance in addition to the Care Cart.
