A message from

Colleen Burckin, DNP, MSN, NE-BC
Director of Nursing and Clinical Practice

Reflecting upon a year full of examples how nursing impacted the health and wellbeing of our patients in East Bay, I continue to be immensely proud.

We continue investing in the professional development of our nurses through innovative, targeted programs aiming to close nurse-identified knowledge and skill gaps.

These programs include our annual NP Peer Education Day, the Richmond Nursing Quality Forum Skills Faire and the Oakland Nursing Quality Forum Lunch and Learn featuring pediatric hematolog-oncology RNs, Erica Przybylski, RN, BSN, CPN and Rebecca Lemons, RN, MSN, CPON. Their work highlights important nursing research findings on the impact of crossing professional boundaries with patients and families.

We also continue seeing a steady increase in the number of new Staff Nurse 3/4 and Nurse Practitioner (NP) 3 awardees. Many RNs transitioned from Staff Nurse 3 to Staff Nurse 4 or maintained their designation. This was supported by lead RNs and NPs across TPMG and KFH who came together to re-imagine what exceptional clinical ladder mentorship could look like and developed tools to support an applicant’s success.

In our emergency departments (ED), nurse engagement in quality improvement projects continue to result in significant, positive patient outcomes. These include an Oakland initiative to reduce length of stay and hospital admission rates for pediatric asthma patients through expedited steroid administration. Across both campuses, we also saw a 100 percent nurse-led initiative to ensure the ED is well prepared for a disaster and IT downtime.

Oakland outpatient adult oncology nurses teamed up with their in-patient counterparts to support the successful implementation of CAR-T Cell therapy providing pre and post hospitalization support to these patients.

In 2026, our journey to nursing excellence will continue by building on what we have accomplished and exploring new opportunities for growth in areas such as nursing research and evidence-based practice. Nurse-led committees, including the Professional Governance Councils and the Nursing Quality Forum, continues to drive progress in quality and patient safety and support nursing professional development and growth, while upholding the highest standards of the profession.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication to improve the health and wellbeing of our members.
