Following the Fall 2024 People Pulse Survey, Chief Nursing Executive and Chief Operating Officer Tina Bray, DNP, MBA, RN, CENP, took a proactive approach to leadership development at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco (KP SSF). The People Pulse Survey, distributed to all Kaiser Permanente employees, measures engagement, satisfaction, and opportunities for growth. After reviewing the results, Bray met with the Assistant Nurse Managers (ANMs) to discuss key findings and model shared accountability for improvement.
During this meeting, Bray introduced the PICK Chart, short for Possible, Implement, Challenge, and Kill, as a structured tool to prioritize actions and drive collaborative problem-solving. She encouraged ANMs to use this framework with their frontline nurses to identify short- and long-term goals based on survey results. Simultaneously, she guided the ANM group through the same exercise, leading them to identify leadership development as their top collective focus area. The group recognized that strengthening their own leadership capabilities would directly enhance team engagement, communication, and patient care.
In response, Bray committed to hosting monthly ANM training sessions throughout 2025, focused on communication, emotional intelligence, coaching skills, and performance management. These sessions foster a safe space for learning, reflection, and peer collaboration while equipping ANMs with the tools to lead with confidence and compassion.
Furthering her commitment to transformational leadership, Bray also included all ANMs, Nurse Managers, and Nurse Directors in the Human-Centered Leadership in Healthcare program. This immersive learning experience featured two onsite workshops, monthly virtual sessions, and reflective book clubs centered on authentic and relational leadership.
Through these initiatives, Bray continues to exemplify transformational leadership, empowering emerging nursing leaders to think critically, act compassionately, and inspire excellence across the organization. Her investment in leadership growth reflects KP SSF’s ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of nurse leaders who drive meaningful, lasting change.
