Transformational Leadership

The dream schedule: A NICU’s collaborative scheduling transformation

In a meaningful shift toward more inclusive and responsive leadership, NICU leaders partnered with staff to reimagine scheduling.

In order to provide a more conducive work-life balance, the process of scheduling for NICU nurses was re-evaluated by nursing leadership to take a more transformative approach.

During leadership rounds and engagement interviews with frontline staff, they launched a new initiative: asking every nurse to share their ideal “Dream Schedule.”

Through collaborative planning and thoughtful coordination, the “Dream Schedule” project was developed. A short-term goal-oriented workgroup consisting of frontline staff, labor partners, and nursing leadership successfully rebalanced the schedule. The results were nothing short of remarkable: every nurse received their preferred shift, unit coverage remained fully intact, and staff satisfaction improved significantly.

This initiative is a powerful example of what’s possible when leadership prioritizes both operational excellence and the well-being of its people. It’s a testament to the power of listening, collaboration, and shared decision-making.
