Transformational Leadership

Teamwork defined together

What began as a simple question— “What does teamwork look like to you?”—quickly became a catalyst for transformation.

“What does teamwork look like to you?”— quickly became a catalyst for transformation. This wasn’t just a hypothetical exercise; it was a direct response to a gap analysis that identified teamwork as a key area for improvement in reducing fall rates within the Falls workgroup. Nursing leaders and frontline staff recognized a unique opportunity to empower their unit teams, inviting them to define what teamwork truly meant in their daily work.

Across the Medical/Surgical/Tele and Intensive Care Unit departments, the response was a surge of creativity and shared purpose. Care teams expressed their collective vision of collaboration through vibrant posters filled with handwritten notes, interactive bulletin boards, and heartfelt shout-outs during monthly staff meetings. These weren’t just decorative displays; they were living reminders of a shared commitment to a safer environment.

The conversation didn’t stop with the bulletin boards. The definitions of teamwork entered the daily dialogue, becoming a common language for support, collaboration, and understanding. As this grassroots movement grew, it sparked deeper discussions about empathy, trust, and shared responsibility. Departments that once struggled with communication found a newfound  openness, and nursing leaders, inspired by their teams’ authentic voices, began to reshape their leadership styles. The result was more than just a decrease in fall rates; it was a transformation in the very culture of care.
