Transformational Leadership

Remembering a transformational leader

Michelle Camicia inspired nurses with vision, research, and mentorship. Her legacy of excellence and heart lives on in care.

Michelle Camicia, PhD, RN, CRRN, CCM, NEA-BC, FARN, FAHA, FAAN (1966–2025) was, above all, a devoted mother and wife. A transformational leader in rehabilitation nursing, as well as a researcher, mentor, and cherished friend. Michelle wore many hats and carried each with exceptional grace. Her vision extended far beyond the walls of the Kaiser Foundation Rehabilitation Center (KFRC), shaping and elevating healthcare policy at the national level. She led with passion and served with unwavering heart and purpose.

In 2025, Michelle was honored posthumously with an American Nurse Association Innovation Award Honorable Mention for her work on the PATH2Caregiving Program. The program she created was deemed “exemplary by the ANCC Magnet Recognition Progam™ for meeting the specific and individual social needs of new family caregivers.

Michelle’s legacy lives on in her influential work, her numerous publications, and the innovative tools she developed, each a testament to her brilliance and dedication. As we walk the halls of KFRC, we will continue to feel the warmth of her presence and hear her reminders to “keep our standards high” and to “always practice by the evidence.” She will be deeply missed, yet forever remembered.
