Transformational Leadership

Nurses give back to the community

AMC nurses continue to lead with heart, extending their impact far beyond the bedside through a culture of community volunteerism.

In 2025, nurses at Kaiser Permanente Antioch Medical Center (AMC) continued their longstanding tradition of community engagement with the launch of the AMC Nursing Volunteer Program. Spearheaded by the Professional Development Core Council, this initiative streamlined communication about upcoming KP-sponsored volunteer opportunities, making it easier than ever for nurses to participate in events that improve health outcomes in our local communities.

Through these efforts, AMC nurses have demonstrated a deep commitment to service beyond the bedside, fostering health education, supporting vulnerable populations, and strengthening community partnerships. Their volunteerism not only addresses immediate needs but also builds lasting trust and resilience within the communities they serve.

Some of our amazing nurse-led initiatives include charitable gift giving, fundraising, food and health education outreach.

Hope House: The Coordination of Care Department organized a successful drive in June, collecting nine boxes of food and clothing for the Hope House Food and Clothing Pantry in Brentwood, directly supporting families in need.

Antioch nurses at a Stroke Awareness event.Stroke Awareness at Brentwood Juneteenth: AMC nurses participated in the Juneteenth event in Brentwood by offering stroke education and promoting health equity. The AMC Stroke Champion nurses provided information to community members of various ages and cultural backgrounds about stroke prevention through nutrition and physical activity and emphasized the importance of early recognition of stroke symptoms and promptly calling 911 for improved outcomes and rehabilitation. The team organized educational activities, distributed prizes, written materials, and healthy snacks.

Diabetes and Maternal Care at Brentwood’s La Gran Fiesta: In October, AMC nursing volunteers delivered vital health education on diabetes management and maternal care to the Brentwood community. Active engagement in initiatives such as these reflect our strong dedication to advancing health equity and ensuring that all community members have access to essential health information and support.

Older Americans Act Birthday Bash: AMC nurse volunteers supported the Older Americans Act 60th Birthday Bash in July by providing health education on advance directives, fall prevention, delirium prevention, and medication safety. Their outreach empowered local seniors and highlighted the OAA’s vital role in supporting senior health and independence.

World Delirium Awareness Day Event: On March 12th, the NICHE committee celebrated World Delirium Awareness Day by educating over 170 community members and staff aboutGroup picture of Antioch nurses with a table display that says NICHE. delirium. The event featured a visually engaging booth highlighting common causes of delirium, the importance of early detection, and effective interventions. Attendees learned about subtle signs of delirium, prevention strategies such as maintaining sleep/wake cycles and proper nutrition and received informational flyers for reference. Staff benefited from resources like the SPICES tool and guidance on reducing caregiver burden. SPICES is an acronym for a brief protocol for multidimensional assessment to identify risk factors related to caring for older adults: skin integrity; problems eating; incontinence; confusion; evidence of falls; and sleep disturbance. A geriatric simulation allowed participants to experience challenges faced by older adults, fostering empathy and equipping staff with knowledge to improve care for our seniors.
