Chief Nursing Executive Juanita “Nita” Jularbal-Walton, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, advanced a landmark shift in leadership culture by inviting Michelle “Mimi” Denila, BSN, RN, a frontline Voice of Nursing (VON) representative, to participate in the annual Napa-Solano Area executive off-site. Her decision broke from longstanding hierarchical norms that traditionally separate executive decision-making from the realities of bedside nursing.
The meeting’s theme, “Boots on the Ground,” initially appeared symbolic, western hats and denim among leadership ranks. Yet as the dialogue unfolded, the phrase transformed into a genuine reflection of purpose: bringing executive presence closer to the point of care. Leaders examined how engagement must extend beyond metrics and dashboards toward lived clinical experience — how strategy gains precision when informed by those who deliver care, not just those who manage it.
When Denila spoke, the room shifted. Her presentation traced her evolution within the Voice of Nursing, from a hesitant participant uncertain of her own voice to a confident advocate commanding the attention of executives. Her account of devotion to patient care, often to the brink of personal exhaustion, offered a mirror to leadership. It reminded everyone that nurses give until giving becomes inconceivable, and that such selflessness, while heroic, is not inexhaustible.
Her reflections challenged assumptions about resilience and exposed the unseen cost of sustaining excellence if without adequate structural support. The discussion that followed acknowledged a deeper truth: those who never seek the spotlight often embody the purest form of leadership. Title-free, but respect-rich.
