From shiftwork to shared plates: A recipe for stronger teams and better connection

3 South B's summer BBQ took collaboration beyond the bedside, fostering connection and growth—personally and professionally.

Walnut Creek’s 3 South B unit hosted a summer barbecue aimed at strengthening teamwork and collaboration among registered nurses. Recognizing the importance of a supportive work environment and effective communication, the Unit Practice Council (UPC) organized the event to provide nurses with an opportunity to connect outside of their clinical roles. Held at a neighborhood park, the barbecue featured food, music, and games designed to encourage social interaction and team building. Nurses from all shifts were invited, ensuring broad participation and helping bridge connections between day and night teams.

The event created a relaxed and welcoming environment where nurses could get to know one another on a personal level, share experiences, and build stronger relationships. Informal conversations naturally evolved into meaningful discussions about unit workflows, shared challenges, and ideas for improving collaboration during shifts. Many participants shared that the event enhanced their sense of camaraderie and belonging. Overall, the summer BBQ was a successful initiative that reinforced the value of investing in team culture to promote collaboration, connection, and job satisfaction on the unit.
