Bridging the bedside: MD-RN rounding builds teamwork and trust

Collaborative MD/RN rounding boosts trust, communication, and care outcomes—transforming teamwork at the patient’s bedside.

In August 2024, Kaiser Permanente Roseville launched the MD-RN Rounding Initiative to strengthen nurse-physician collaboration and improve patient-centered care.  The goal was to increase bedside rounding to 50%, build trust in RN clinical judgment, and reduce message volume to physicians.

Initial surveys revealed that MD/RN rounding was not occurring on the second floor. In response, a structured workflow was introduced: nurses prepared using a standardized checklist, received alerts when physicians arrived, participated in collaborative bedside rounds, and updated care plans afterward. The checklist guided discussion across key domains — neuro, cardiac, respiratory, gastroenterology, genitourinary, mobility, pain, and family concerns.

The impact was immediate and sustained. Rounding rates consistently surpassed the 50% target, and trust in RN clinical judgment rose from 64.4% to 75.9% by May 2025, remaining above goal for the rest of the year. Feedback from nurses, physicians, and families highlighted improved communication, reduced messaging, and a more unified care experience.

To ensure long-term success, sustainability efforts include regular huddle reminders, visual cues on the unit, quarterly audits, and recognition at Hospital Based Staff meetings. The initiative has fostered stronger interdisciplinary relationships, empowered nurses at the bedside, and enhanced the overall quality of care. This project demonstrates how clear goals, thoughtful planning, and frontline engagement can lead to lasting improvements in teamwork, trust, and patient outcomes.
