5 South opening expands inpatient access

Introducing 5 South: expanding access, enhancing care, and creating a brighter healing space for our community.

A new nursing unit expands inpatient access for the community and elevates the nursing work environment – introducing 5 South!

The opening of the new beds at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento (SSC) stands as a testament to the exceptional dedication of our nursing staff and their commitment to meeting the community’s growing needs. With the expansion of the fifth floor — now transformed into a state-of-the-art unit mirroring the high standards and healing environment found throughout the South Tower — our nurses are empowered with the latest medical equipment, thoughtfully designed patient spaces, and an abundance of natural light. These enhancements not only elevate the quality of care but also allow our nursing teams to provide more personalized and attentive support to every patient.

“Adding these much-needed beds to our hospital is critical to help alleviate some of the challenges we’ve been dealing with day in and day out, particularly with our high census and increasing demand for care,” said Jay Robinson, PsyD, Senior Vice President and Area Manager, Sacramento and South Sacramento.

The opening of 5 South, combined with last year’s completion of the 42,000-square-foot Emergency Department expansion, will help with the medical center’s throughput, while enhancing patient care and safety. “Opening these additional beds will help ensure patients receive the right care, in the right place,” said Katie Hoganson, MSN, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nurse Executive, South Sacramento. “Thank you to all our teams for your dedication and hard work in providing ongoing safe patient care in our surge spaces.”

By expanding bed capacity and incorporating beautiful, calming artwork that inspires both patients and staff, SSC is better equipped to serve our members with compassion and expertise. The addition of 5 South and the ongoing development of new observation units enable our nurses to deliver the right care in the right place, improving patient outcomes and ensuring that families across our community feel supported during their hospital experience. This growth underscores our unwavering commitment to safe, high-quality nursing care and strengthens the hospital’s ability to respond effectively to increasing demands for health services.
