Specialty Training Programs earn Practice Transition Accreditation (PTAP)

Redwood City nurses and preceptors played a pivotal role in achieving national recognition for specialty transition programs.

In 2025, Kaiser Permanente Redwood City proudly participated in both the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Labor & Delivery (L&D) specialty training programs that allow experienced nurses to transition into new practice areas. Each program includes standardized preceptor training, didactic sessions, and 16 weeks of immersive clinical experience guided by regional and local site leads.

Redwood City’s active participation and dedication of its preceptors were instrumental in Kaiser Permanente Northern California achieving American Nurses Credentialing Center Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP) status. This prestigious accreditation recognizes excellence in supporting nurses through specialty transitions and underscores our commitment to professional development and high-quality patient care.

In 2025, four ICU nurses and two L&D nurses completed the program, joining a growing legacy of eight ICU and 16 L&D cohorts across Northern California. These programs strengthen clinical expertise and foster mentorship, as seasoned nurses step into preceptor roles to provide hands-on teaching and share their knowledge with participants.

Specialty training programs are a win-win for both departments: they elevate unit culture, expand growth opportunities, and bring renewed energy to ICU and L&D teams. PTAP accreditation is a testament to the collaboration, expertise, and passion that drive nursing excellence at Redwood City.
