Perioperative Services Safety Summit

Every quarter, interprofessional members of Perioperative Services gather to share information to enhance safety and teamwork.

Under the leadership of Lionel Hoyte, DNP, RN, NE-BC, CNOR, HACP, Perioperative Services Clinical Nursing Director, a quarterly meeting with all members of the perioperative teams gather to learn and review items that are pertinent to their practice areas. Members include staff and clinicians from anesthesia, admitting, pre-op, PACU, sterile processing, materials and surgery. The purpose of these quarterly summits is to raise awareness of safety issues, share knowledge and experiences, promote a positive safety culture, focus on continuous improvement, and improve patient outcomes.

During the 3rd quarter Safety Summit, the infection prevention team shared data about recent surgical site infections. The risk and compliance team shared updates on recent harm events with a discussion on trends and findings. A new blood administration workflow was introduced to reduce risk of errors in blood transmission. Members of the care experience teams shared updates on patient surveys and reviewed key drivers specific to perioperative services.
