Nurses at Manteca Medical Center have truly embraced frontline driven change and professional governance. The Unit Based Council (UBC) at Manteca felt change was needed in the way staff meetings were coordinated and facilitated. Leaders would stand in front of the frontline staff and report metric performance and opportunity, but there was a lack of staff engagement and inspiration.
The UBC knew there was a better way for this critically important information to be relayed to staff. The team went to nurse manager, Jasleen Sandhu, MSN, RN, and said “we got this!”
The committee worked hand in hand with leadership to develop meetings that included HRO education, status of UBC projects, metric performance, new initiatives, and informational shares. The UBC then committed to facilitating the quarterly staff meetings, scheduling sessions for day shift and night shift. The team took ownership and accountability of the opportunities that were presented. They didn’t shy away from difficult conversations or questions, but instead, their leadership abilities and passion for quality and excellence allowed them to convey the “why.”
The staff felt heard and invigorated after the meetings which was reflected through the meeting evaluations.
