Professional certification is a cornerstone of nursing excellence. Evidence shows that units with higher certification rates experience lower risk events, stronger nurse engagement, and improved patient outcomes. To further advance professional development, Kaiser Permanente San Francisco has set a goal to increase certification rates by 1% each year.
While many resources already existed, clinical nurses expressed the need for opportunities that reduced upfront costs. Nursing leaders also voiced interest in pursuing certification but often had already used tuition reimbursement for education expenses. Recognizing these barriers, Bridget Williams, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nurse Executive, and Gabriela DeBenedetti, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Magnet Program Director, explored options to support both clinical nurses and leaders.
With regional support, KP San Francisco committed to the ANCC Success Pays Program, which provides voucher codes to cover the cost of any ANCC certification exam — whether initial or recertification. This initiative does not replace existing reimbursement programs but serves as a supplemental option, ensuring that financial constraints no longer stand in the way of professional growth. Since its launch in November 2025, KP SFO has had 17 applicants, which would exceed the 1% goal set.
By removing cost barriers, KP San Francisco is empowering nurses to pursue certification more readily, reinforcing a culture of professionalism and excellence. Certification not only validates clinical expertise but also enhances confidence, strengthens engagement, and directly contributes to safer, higher-quality patient care.
The Success Pays Program reflects KP San Francisco’s dedication to investing in its nursing workforce. By supporting certification, the organization is fostering a stronger professional community and advancing outcomes for patients and families.
