Professional Governance Council uses EBP to successfully implement Peer Feedback

Nurses actively participating in the professional governance councils at KP SRF conduct a group EBP project to implement peer feedback.

The Kaiser Permanente San Rafael Medical Center (KP SRF) Voice of Nursing (VON) professional governance council met in January 2025 to revisit previous attempts to implement peer feedback among clinical nurses—efforts that historically saw little adoption. As a next step, council members collectively agreed to develop a PICOT question and conduct a structured literature review under the guidance of council advisor and EBP mentor, Angelica Rincon, DNP, RN, NEA‑BC, CNOR. After completing the review, the council identified promising evidence supporting peer feedback as a potential group evidence‑based practice (EBP) project.

During the literature search, council members located 32 articles and, after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, narrowed the list to seven. They used council time to practice critical appraisal skills, applying the Johns Hopkins EBP tools and documenting findings on a summary‑and‑synthesis form. The literature consistently indicated that educational sessions are an effective strategy for preparing nurses to give and receive peer feedback. Such training helps build confidence, clarifies expectations, and reinforces the value and benefits of integrating peer feedback into professional practice.

By March 2025, the council had developed an implementation plan that included education and training sessions, supporting PowerPoint materials, and pre‑ and post‑questionnaires. The team identified a valid and reliable measurement instrument to assess nurses’ perceptions and beliefs about peer feedback and secured permission from the tool’s owner. Between March and May, 158 nurses completed the anonymous questionnaire.

In addition to gaining insights into nurses’ attitudes toward peer feedback, the initiative resulted in successful implementation across KP SRF: approximately 68% of nurses completed the peer feedback process, with completion rates exceeding 80% in departments that participated in the nurse‑led educational sessions.

Through this work, the VON council experienced the benefits of experiential learning and successfully translated evidence into practice, enhancing professional growth and strengthening a culture of continuous improvement in nursing.
