Innovating the PACU: The healing environment project

A nurse-led innovation brought sound-reducing curtains, calming visuals, and music to the PACU—enhancing healing and comfort.

In 2024, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) clinical nurse Sharmaine Safholm, BSN, RN, CAPA, recognized an opportunity to enhance the recovery experience for post-operative patients by fostering a more healing-centered environment. Her vision led to the launch of the Healing Environment Project; an initiative aimed at reducing environmental stressors and improving patient comfort.

Over the course of 2024 and 2025, the PACU team implemented a series of thoughtful, evidence-based changes. One of the most impactful was the introduction of the HUSH Curtain® — a sound-absorbing privacy curtain with acoustical inserts — designed to reduce ambient noise, improve privacy, and promote a more restful atmosphere. These curtains have significantly contributed to a calmer, more therapeutic space during the critical post-operative period.

Additional enhancements included the installation of cloud ceiling covers over fluorescent lighting in pediatric recovery bays, creating a softer and more comforting visual experience for young patients. The team also began offering soothing music during recovery, when appropriate, to further support relaxation and healing.

These improvements, implemented throughout 2024 and 2025, reflect a deep commitment to patient-centered care and demonstrate how intentional environmental changes can positively influence healing, satisfaction, and overall well-being in the PACU setting.
