A day of innovation: ICU experts tackle stroke, seizures, and more to elevate critical care practice.

On October 16, 2025, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Education Council proudly hosted its third annual Critical Care Symposium, an essential event for critical care professionals committed to advancing clinical expertise. This full-day program offered 7 continuing education units for nurses and featured dynamic presentations, case studies, and interactive learning opportunities. Highlights included:

  • From PADIS to PAADIS: Updates on SCCM guidelines for pain, agitation, and delirium management
  • When Blood Hurts: Understanding transfusion-related reactions
  • From Catheter to Crisis: CRRT case studies and troubleshooting
  • Time in Seizure is Brain: Managing status epilepticus
  • Managing the Storm: Stroke complications in critical care
  • Shock, Drop, and Hold: Demystifying hemodynamics

The symposium also showcased six professional poster presentations on topics such as nurse recognition, mentorship, fall prevention, and ultrasound guided intravenous care, highlighting the dedication and innovation of Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento nurses. In addition to engaging and world-class speakers, this day showcased work from other initiatives within the ICU and at a facility level. Attendees explored unit practice council initiatives, clinical ladder advancement, caring science initiatives, and certification pathways, alongside insights from Magnet Director Christen Straw, DNP, RN, CNL, NEA-BC, CENP.

Adding to the experience, vendors provided educational sessions on products currently in use at KP SSC. This event reflects our ongoing commitment to excellence in patient care and professional development. Thank you to all who participated and contributed to making this symposium a success!
