Advancing a culture of inquiry through evidence-based practice

KP SSF nurses embrace inquiry and innovation at the EBP Workshop turning questions into solutions for patient care.

Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco is deeply committed to advancing a culture of inquiry, innovation, and evidence-based practice (EBP). Our nurses are encouraged to ask meaningful clinical questions, challenge existing practices, and seek out the best available evidence to guide care decisions that improve outcomes for our patients and community.

In 2025, the EBP, Research, and Innovation Council, comprised of Anahid Dalley, RN; Christina Taylor, BSN, RN; Elena Anuryeva, RN; Irma Hong, BSN, RN, PHN; Alice Luu, BSN, RN, Cobi Tan, BSN, RN, Marlon Caballero, BSN, RN; Miguel Ignacio, MSN, RN; and Galen Wangberg, BSN, RN, identified the need to strengthen foundational knowledge of EBP across the organization. Driven by their shared vision, the council proposed hosting an in-person Foundations of Evidence-Based Practice Workshop in partnership with the UCSF Learning Institute, which Chief Nurse Executive and Chief Operating Officer Tina Bray, DNP, MBA, RN, CENP, fully supported.

Held November 12–14, 2025, at KP South San Francisco, the three-day workshop brought together 24 nurses from across departments for an immersive learning experience. Participants explored the seven steps of the EBP process, developed PICO(T) questions, and learned how to systematically search for and critically appraise a body of evidence. Working in small groups, nurses identified and explored potential solutions to organizational opportunities aligned with our Nursing Strategic Plan, including those related to the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI), Patient Experience, RN Engagement and Satisfaction, and RN Workplace Safety.

The workshop enhanced nurses’ confidence, competence in using evidence, and also reinforced a spirit of curiosity and collaboration across all levels of practice. By equipping nurses with the tools to lead evidence-based change, KP South San Francisco continues to strengthen its commitment to professional excellence and to delivering high-quality, data-driven, and compassionate care.
