Abigail Hallam BSN, RN; NICU RN is initiating care board communication for a newly arrived patient. She will orient families to the board and encourage them to write on the boards. The NICU UPC created the board with the support of NICU leadership, physicians and physical therapists to ensure the boards were tailored to the specific needs of our NICU population.

Patient care board: Working towards home

Care team and family communication are imperative to building relationships with parents and improving patient outcomes.

The Patient Care Board project goal was to make our patient care boards more interactive for our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) parents and care teams allowing families to feel more involved in the care of their babyThe process included surveying staff and families about what they would change about our current care boards and implementing those changes in our new design.

The care boards have been utilized for the last 3 months at patients’ bedsides. Staff and families have been oriented to the board and encouraged to interact with them. When staff and parents were asked if the new care boards are useful and visually pleasing both groups shared positive feedback with minimal suggested changes.

A NICU mom stated“I love the family messages section on the care board.  used the board to communicate to the nurses which outfits I wanted my little one to wear for the first time.”

NICU nurses like the ease of finding parent information, especially information needed to call families for timely updates or logging in for a video visit when parents are unable to visit their baby.
