Violeta Luna‑Jones, BSN, RN, a rapid response nurse on San Leandro’s critical care team and Chair of IMPACT’s Education, Practice & Informatics Council, was inspired by her attendance at the 2024 ANCC Magnet Conference to bring nursing back to its basics, focusing on the why behind daily practice.
When the new edition of the American Nursing Associations Code of Ethics was released in January 2025, Violeta advocated for purchasing copies for the council. Together, they committed to studying one provision each month, directly connecting nursing practice to the ethical foundations of the profession.
With an expanded informatics focus added to the council this year, Luna-Jones recognized that equipping colleagues with knowledge and ownership of their practice would be essential in navigating major changes at the medical center. While leading the CIS Cutover project, a large infrastructure update to the electronic health record, she tied the work to Provision 4:
“Nurses have authority over nursing practice and are responsible and accountable to their practice consistent with their obligations to promote health, prevent illness, and provide optimal care.”
She empowered council members by emphasizing that nursing’s ethical awareness ensures change is always in the patient’s best interest, while also reminding them of the responsibility to manage change effectively and prepare staff thoroughly.
Throughout 2025, the council focused on all 10 provisions, dedicating each month to a new theme. With this alignment, the Education, Practice & Informatics Council successfully introduced new functions of ROVER into practice, guided and educated staff through the CIS crossover, and educated nurses on the policy approval workflow.
By integrating the Nursing Code of Ethics, Luna-Jones and the council demonstrated how clinical nurses can drive meaningful, patient-centered change.
