Festive safety fair promotes learning and collaboration

A Halloween-themed Safety Fair at the Fresno Medical Center showcased teamwork, education, and hands-on practices for safer care.

Hospital and outpatient clinic employees partnered to host a festive, Halloween-themed safety fair at the Fresno Medical Center in October 2025. The engaging event was filled with education, hands-on learning, games, and treats.

The event was a partnership between Safety, Patient Care Services, and the Infection Control Committee. Booths highlighted key safety initiatives and infection prevention strategies like hand hygiene, patient lifting and transport, waste management and respiratory protection.

“The importance of cleaning hands before and after patient contact, after glove removal, and when visibly soiled was emphasized,” Staff Nurse IV and Inpatient Nurse Quality Liaison Rizza Valerio Elep, RN, Telemetry, said. “Waste management was also a focus. Staff learned to place contaminated materials like dressings and gloves in red bags while keeping food and regular trash out of them. An emphasis was placed on safe needle disposal, reminding staff that all used needles, syringes, and other sharps must be immediately discarded in designated sharps containers without recapping or bending them.”

Departments also showcased the Connection Bundle – a set of daily practices designed to create a meaningful inpatient experience – highlighting its role in promoting patient safety and strengthening communication among care teams. In addition, quality improvement initiatives were featured to demonstrate the impact of evidence-based practices on delivering safer, higher-quality care.

“Each team contributed displays and demonstrations that emphasized hands-on safety practices and equipment use,” Valerio Elep said. “Together, these efforts reflected the strong collaboration at Kaiser Permanente Fresno. Teamwork, innovation, and patient-centered care are driving a safer and stronger health care community.”
