Enhancing the antepartum patient experience

When the L&D team assumed care of the Antepartum department last year, they saw an opportunity to support patients beyond clinical needs.

When the Labor and Delivery team assumed care of the Antepartum department last year, they recognized an opportunity to support patients beyond clinical needs. Antepartum patients often face long, emotionally challenging hospitalizations, and the team sought to provide comfort, connection, and well-being during these extended stays.

The first initiative was a welcoming resource board featuring photos of Maternal–Fetal Medicine providers. This helps patients put faces to names and fosters familiarity, especially as providers may change throughout their stay. Alongside it, the team introduced a shared patient journal, where individuals can write reflections, encouragement, or messages for one another. This simple tool builds community among patients who might otherwise feel isolated, offering wisdom from those who have walked the same path.

To further support emotional and mental health, the team consolidated information on hospital resources and made them easily accessible. Details on volunteer services, pet therapy visits, and a wellness calendar with relaxation tools and supportive programs were added to the board, giving patients practical ways to find comfort or distraction during prolonged stays.

Though still in its early stages, the program’s impact is already evident. Patients are engaging with the resources, and leaders see growing enthusiasm for expanding the initiative. With ongoing feedback, the Labor and Delivery team is committed to building on this foundation by continuing to create supportive, meaningful experiences for Antepartum patients who spend days or weeks away from home in anticipation of welcoming their new family member.

This emerging program reflects the team’s deep commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care and marks a promising step toward improving the Antepartum patient experience.
