Under the leadership of Stroke Coordinator Sheryn Shahwan-Solorzano, PhD (c), MSN, RN, CPHQ, CPAHA, the “Clots and Coffee” program was implemented as part of Kaiser Permanente Redwood City’s Stroke Awareness Month in May 2025. This initiative plays an integral role in the stroke education program by promoting enhanced awareness and preparedness among healthcare professionals through interactive activities. Its primary objective is to equip hospital staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and respond effectively to stroke symptoms, utilizing an engaging approach that incorporates themed costumes, coffee, and donuts, collectively referred to as “clots.”
Members of the quality team, dressed as various clinical entities such as aneurysms, blood clots, stents, and clot-busting agents (including TNK and tPA), visited multiple departments to assess staff understanding of stroke symptoms and treatment options, providing educational quizzes and refreshments. The program also expanded its outreach efforts to the wider community, increasing public awareness of Kaiser Permanente Redwood City’s stroke initiatives at locations including the Farmer’s Market, Caltrain Station, and the 2025 Pacific Stroke Association Conference.
