In 2025, the Float Pool team at Kaiser Permanente Roseville set a focused care experience goal around the care experience question, “Staff eased discomfort.” To bring this goal to life, the Care Experience Committee examined patient feedback and environmental challenges in overflow units, particularly RSO and SSO, which lack private restrooms and showers.
It became clear that basic hygiene such as bed baths, partial baths, linen changes were not consistently provided unless clinically indicated. The baseline percentage of hygiene events being completed in the overflow units in January 2025 was 18%. The team launched a pilot project in RSO with a target of ensuring that 75% of patients received some form of hygiene daily.
The strategy involved dividing responsibilities between day and night shifts with each nurse, including break and mobility nurses, assigned to provide at least one bed bath per shift. This collaborative approach quickly yielded positive results. After three months of sustained success in RSO, the initiative expanded to additional overflow units: MBO, PDO, and SSO.
The impact was tangible — patients reported feeling cleaner and more comfortable, and staff observed improved morale and engagement. The average for the month of July was 51%, a positive change from the baseline of 18%. Most notably, the “Staff eased discomfort” score rose steadily, reaching 72.4 in July, surpassing the goal of 71.8. This initiative exemplifies how targeted, team-driven efforts can enhance patient experience in meaningful ways.
The Float Pool team plans to continue tracking hygiene metrics and sharing progress on the Daily Management System board to sustain and build upon these outcomes.
