Nurses at the Kaiser Permanente Redwood City (KP RWC) achieved a major milestone in their 2025 Nursing Strategic Plan: a 3% increase in nursing specialty certification, surpassing the annual goal and strengthening the depth of clinical expertise across the organization. This achievement reflects the focused efforts of the Professional Development Council (PDC), led by Lorraine Monegas, BSN, RN, and Edward Cruz, RN, whose members identified certification growth as a key priority for supporting high-quality, evidence-based nursing practice.
To build momentum and create an environment where certification is valued and attainable, the PDC implemented several systemwide strategies. The team hosted a Professional Development Day, offering hands-on support, guidance on certification pathways, access to resources, and opportunities to speak directly with certified peers. Senior nursing leaders also amplified recognition by celebrating newly certified nurses during team huddles across all shifts, ensuring that accomplishments were acknowledged in real time and in front of colleagues.
One of the most visible symbols of this work was the creation and installation of Certified Nurse Walls in every unit throughout the hospital. These displays feature the photo and credentials of each certified nurse, placed prominently in patient-facing lobbies to highlight nursing expertise and reinforce public trust in the care provided at KP RWC. The walls have become a point of pride, celebrating nurses’ achievements while inspiring others to pursue their own specialty certification.
Through recognition, education, and shared accountability, KP RWC continues to build a culture where professional advancement is supported and celebrated, advancing both nursing excellence and patient care outcomes.
