Perinatal Equity Taskforce

In listening to our patients, families, partners and our staff, we continually evolve how we integrate EID into our organization’s infrastructure approach to strategy. Our CNE, Bridget Williams, DNP, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, has made an ongoing commitment to treat equity as a core value. Rather than on its own silo, it has been considered a perspective to how we provide nursing care. This slide shows a component selection of our SF 2021 – 2025 Nursing Strategic Plan. It was developed collaboratively between all our PCS directors and nursing practice leadership to keep equity principles woven into how we provide and measure care success.

As we’ve put a spotlight on how we will bring ethics of justice and care for our patients and families, in San Francisco we’ve put a similar focus on our staff. This was the first year within our Nursing Skills Days that we wanted to elicit and highlight ethical treatment to one another as a core training competency. We co-developed a peer-led microaggression training in collaboration with our Equity Program Manager. It was through our Taskforce Committee, with our workforce’s experiences, we as a collective group developed a micro aggression training that would empower our nursing staff to facilitate and engage with their peers. This was instrumental as our nurses led their peers in safe learning and perspective in developing their equitable leadership skills. It has been a success in how we’ve put our staff at the center of our EID work. Claudia Uribe, Clinical RN, presented implicit vs explicit bias presentation at RN skills day, MCH Physician Residents, nurse’s week and Professional Governance Council.

Equally, as we’ve challenged ourselves in how we bring ethical treatment as a training development area, we have also been giving focus of how we approach Social Determinants of Health. Spearheading an effort called Continuity Group, this group takes into consideration of how we look, assess and share information of our patients from a Social Determinants of Health perspective from outpatient to inpatient setting

Through strategies such as multidisciplinary team rounds, called Hello Rounds, and focusing on BIPOCC Care Experience Performance, PY24 (to date) we have improved on RN and MD Consistency in Information and Care for our BIPOCC* patient populations by a positive change percent of 11.52%

(PY23 = 56.22%, PY24 = 67.74%).

Black-Maternal-Health-Event

Black Maternal Health Week

Black Maternal Week was a significant event that brought essential focus to the unique challenges and disparities faced by Black mothers. It functioned as a vital platform for storytelling, raising awareness, and advocating for enhanced maternal health care. The week featured informative workshops, engaging panel discussions, and community activities that underscored the importance of support systems and resources for Black mothers. The culminating day of the celebration stood out as particularly memorable, featuring several community speakers. An audience comprising administrators, doctors, nurses, and maternal and child health staff was moved by culturally resonant poetry. One poignant moment came from a Black man who bravely shared his feelings of isolation following the loss of his infant, expressing how the focus was predominantly on his wife while his grief went unnoticed. Another impactful speaker recounted her experience with health care workers, who failed to recognize her need for mental health support. This individual had crafted a compelling film documenting her journey toward self-actualization, all captured through her own camera. As she shared her story, it left the audience in tears.

The keynote address was delivered by one of Kaiser Permanente’s senior vice presidents, who recounted her own maternal experience characterized by disrespect and condescension. She emphasized that her professional background did not shield her from these challenges, highlighting the troubling literature that supports these findings. Additionally, the ongoing disparities in maternal health across various income and education levels underscore the necessity of addressing racism and discrimination as integral components of efforts to improve health outcomes and promote equity.

Many participants expressed their gratitude for the chance to connect and learn from each other, fostering a profound sense of solidarity and empowerment. The event not only celebrated the strength and resilience of Black mothers but also underscored the urgent need for systemic reform to ensure equitable health care for all.

To ensure that the strength of the speakers was captured, the Director of Maternal and Child Health commissioned a caricature artist to visually document the event. The artist set up their easel amidst the vibrant energy of participants engaged in discussions and activities. As attendees shared their stories, the artist focused on portraying the spectrum of emotions—joy, determination, solidarity, and hope. By the conclusion of the event, the artist had created a visual testament to the shared experiences and collective desire for change. Attendees admired the artwork, reminiscing about the moments they experienced together, further solidifying the sense of community fostered during Black Maternal Week

Professional Governance Coordinating Council: Voice of Nursing (VON)

Earlier this year, we launched our Shared Professional Governance Councils and Program, engaging both front-line nursing staff and leadership. This initiative fosters professional development, decision-making, and a collaborative culture. By encouraging a spirit of inquiry and utilizing evidence-based practices, we aim to improve clinical practices, patient care, care experience, and patient outcomes. Through technology, innovation, and transformational leadership, we are empowering nurses and shaping our culture. Though early in our journey to excellence, the positive impact and enthusiasm have been strong, improving patient care, quality, and safety.
