The Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Veterans Association actively give back to the local veteran community through a series of heartfelt initiatives throughout the year.  

Kaiser Permanente Redwood City launched Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a vibrant fashion show, inviting attendees to showcase traditional attire and dance representing their cultural heritage.

On World Stroke Day, Stroke Coordinator, Sheryn Shahwan-Solorzano, PhD (c), MSN, RN, CPHQ, and quality nurse consultant, Marsha Belen, MSN, RN, went into the community at the Caltrain station to share life-saving knowledge about the signs and symptoms of stroke. Together, we’re raising awareness and empowering everyone to act FAST.

The 5 core councils implemented key initiatives to enhance structure, process, and accountability. A formal project approval process ensured alignment with the nursing strategic plan.

In 2024, the Kaiser Permanente Redwood City African American Association hosted a vibrant Juneteenth celebration centered around the empowering theme, “Breaking Every Chain.”

In a heartfelt effort to support grieving families, Sandra Vargas, BSN, RN, CPLC, with the support of the maternal child health nursing unit council and management, organized a beautiful "Wave of Light" ceremony for perinatal loss, bringing healing to both parents, their loved ones, staff, physicians and the and the community.

Maternal Sepsis is a leading cause of preventable maternal deaths, with 63% considered avoidable according to the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC). In response, NCAL Regional leadership implemented a maternal sepsis Best Practice Alert (BPA) in February 2024 to enhance early identification and treatment. 

Redwood City nurse leaders collaborated to find an innovative solution to improve the strategic goal of discharging patients by 1 p.m.

Redwood City nurses hold a special connection with patients who become organ and tissue donors because of profound neurologic injuries.

Several nurse leaders supported the future of nursing by serving as a mentor to nurses new to their practice.

To improve the patient care experience and strengthen communication the Labor and Delivery Nursing Unit Council developed patient care boards in every patient room on the unit.

After identifying a gap in medication communication through HCAHPS data, the 5 South Nursing Unit Council implemented a project to enhance patient engagement and understanding.

External ventricular drains (EVDs) are used to manage cerebrospinal fluid diversion in some of the most vulnerable critically ill patients in the Redwood City Neuro ICU.  Historically, the ICU has maintained a <0.25% external ventricular drain infection rate.

As a Comprehensive Stroke Center, Redwood City nurses receive annual training to stay current on stroke care advancements.

To address the growing need for pediatric asthma care in a busy Emergency Department, the Nursing Unit Council collaborated with leadership to establish a dedicated space equipped with a pediatric asthma chair and equipment cart. 

Fourteen Redwood City nurses attended the 2024 ANCC Magnet Conference.

Redwood City nurses led various research and EBP projects in 2024, and had the opportunity to give podium and poster presentations.

The Emergency Department identified a need to improve compliance with door-to-EKG times in their 2023 data.

In the spirit of maintaining one of the lowest Safety Priority Index (SPI) scores across all Kaiser Permanente Northern California medical centers, the Redwood City Quality & Safety Council is taking action to help reduce patient harm, including preventative measures for falls, HAPI, HAP, CLABSI, and CAUTI.  

Low Nulliparous, Term, Singleton, Vertex (NTSV) cesarean delivery rates are considered an indicator of high-quality maternity care.

Kaiser Permanente nurses demonstrated their commitment to creating and sustaining a culture of excellence by advancing their professional practice through earning advanced degrees, moving to the next level of the clinical ladder, obtaining national board certification, and graduating from the nurse residency program.
