Santa Clara Voice Of Nursing Professional Governance

Annually, our Coordinating Council evaluates our professional governance model and identifies opportunities for improvement. A task force of dedicated clinical nurses and nurse leaders conducted an in-depth assessment, including interviews and evaluations of the Voice of Nursing (VON) facility and unit councils. Members highlighted challenges such as inconsistent meeting times, operational obstacles, and a need for more support and alignment with projects.

The new model, aimed at enhancing participation and effectiveness, emerged from this feedback. In collaboration with the Coordinating Council, the task force developed a one-day Professional Governance model, leveraging Caring Science to connect actions through authentic caring relationships.

The Nursing Professional Governance Day, launched on February 22, 2024, occurs on the fourth Thursday of every month. It begins with a 90-minute session featuring recognition, information sharing, and education aligned with the nursing code of ethics. The day focuses on nurse-led improvements, professional growth, and development opportunities within units and across the medical center.

This new model provides time and opportunities for nurses to achieve our nursing vision, fostering a more efficient and effective healthcare environment. We are inspired by the positive impact this will have on our profession.
