Transforming care with new nursing roles

We are excited to share the development and onboarding of key roles that significantly enhance geriatric care and the overall patient experience. Geriatric Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Philip Garcia, MS, RN, AGCNS-BC, PCCN, and Throughput & Patient Experience Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) Adrianne Meister, BSN, RN, CCRN are driving these improvements.  

Garica has led the creation of the Geriatric Nurse Champions program, encouraging nurses Becky Nguyen, RN, Christina Taylor, RN, CMSRN,  Tina Pham, BSN, RN, Venice Santos, BSN, RN, Stefanie Nastari, BSN, RN, CPAN, CAPA, Sherrie Domingo, BSN, RN, Mar Win, BSN, RN, CPH, Ayin Chang, BSN, RN, CCRN, Mike Ignacio, MSN, RN, Katherine Li, BSN, RN, Pearl Wilson, BSN, RN, and Peggy Zhao, BSN, RN to complete the Geriatric Resource Nurse (GRN) program through NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders). This initiative empowers nurses with advanced skills to provide exceptional care for older adults, directly improving clinical outcomes and enriching the patient experience. 

Meister collaborates with ANMs and nurse managers across the SSF system to optimize patient flow, enhance throughput, and improve patient satisfaction. This role ensures timely, efficient, and compassionate care for all patients by streamlining care processes and addressing barriers from admission to discharge.

Accomplishments

July – Re-launched PGC with applications for all areas with a focus to create 8 new units councils and relaunching of our 4 Core Councils.

August – All 12 Councils selected the chair and chair elect and confirmed their core council representatives. 60 front-line nurse leaders supported by 20 Director/Manager nurse leaders!

August – AMC launched HEREOS Committee with all areas represented and dissolved Quality A&B to align it closely as the workgroup under Quality & Safety Core Council

September – RN Engagement Survey shared and Units and PGC began action planning 3 goals with the “little bit more” as our focus areas.

October – Launched S-O-A-R QR code to showcase organizational achievement and recognitions where anyone can share stories and upload pictures of clinical excellence, professional practice enhancements, exceptional care experiences, and professional growth.

November – Launched AMC Nursing Recognition Committee to focus on Daisy, PETAL, & Lotus Award to allow Professional Development Core Council to focus on org-wide improvement of Professional Development. Recognitions and Retention will be of strategic focus for Coordinating & Executive Council going forward.

December – All councils have established pillar aligned goals and will be prepared for 2025 and our upcoming Nursing Strategic Planning Retreat in January!

Transformational Leadership

The Antioch Medical Center’s Professional Governance Council structure was relaunched in July, 2024. 8 new Unit Councils, ensuring diversity, inclusion, and equity of membership across all nursing areas of the Medical Center were launched. The Professional Governance Council will lead a model of shared decision making and will empower nurses to enhance and innovate their practice. The HEROES committee has been aligned with the Quality and Safety Core Council and AMC Nursing Recognition Committee to support meaningful recognition for nurses. 60 front-line staff nurses joined the councils and are supported by the Nursing leadership team. Plans for a 5th Core Council focused on Practice and Informatics is in progress and will begin in January 2025.

San Rafael nurses attend ANCC Magnet Conference

Seventeen San Rafael nurses attended the 2024 annual conference in New Orleans, joining several hundred Kaiser Permanente Northern California nurse colleagues. 

The conference was full of opportunities for professional development, skill building, learning from evidence-based practices, research, and a fantastic opportunity for collaboration with peers and colleagues from across the US and beyond.  It was a fun and exciting way to learn and build upon teamwork and community within nursing.

We C.A.R.E. peer support program for well-being 

We C.A.R.E. is a caritas nurse peer support program offers emotional first aid to peers within the medical center.  Ten caritas nurses participated in additional training using Dr. Jean Watson’s Human Caring Theory and Dr. Susan Scott’s Three-Tiered Interventional Model as the theoretical framework to build a comprehensive program to assist health care professionals following an unanticipated adverse event. 

Peer support nurses are authentically present, creating a caring-healing environment that supports human dignity within the medical center.  Together, the nursing team is leveraging evidence-based practice to help promote well-being within their working environment.

Perioperative journal club fuels continuous learning

Perioperative Services first Journal Club commenced in November of 2024.  The journal club serves as a critical platform for continuous learning and professional development in healthcare.  By regularly gathering to critically analyze and discuss recent publications, we can stay current in the latest advancements, information and evidenced based practice. 

The collaborative session between members of perioperative services not only enhances individual knowledge, but also fosters a culture of intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and interdisciplinary dialogue.  Through rigorous peer review and discussion, clinicians can evaluate the methodological rigor of studies and translate the evidenced based care to improve patient care outcomes. 

Moreover, our journal club provides a valuable opportunity for professionals to develop essential skills and knowledge, while encouraging clinicians to stay engaged.  By creating a structure environment for continuous learning, our journal club plays a pivotal role in maintaining high standards of evidenced based practice, promoting innovation and ultimately improving patient outcomes across our team.  New PACU manager, Kimberly Sommerhaug brings her positive experience with journal club because she was able to see how evidenced based practice translates into safe patient outcomes.  The perioperative team and the staff were excited and embraced learning opportunities. 

 

KP SRO Nurses celebrating

Santa Rosa Magnet Ambassador committee: A year of growth and celebration

In January 2024, Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa (KP SRO) kicked off the Magnet Ambassador Committee with our first-ever “Retreat,” marking the official launch of this important initiative. The retreat brought together 40 enthusiastic participants from across the medical center, including Home Health and the Emergency Department, to learn about KP SRO’s Magnet journey and the crucial role of Magnet Ambassadors. The energy from this meeting was contagious, and soon the committee grew to more than 60 members, representing various disciplines, with nursing at the heart of the work. 

During Nurses’ Week, the committee held a successful three-day Magnet Fair, themed “Passport to Sonoma County.” This engaging event allowed members of the hospital care team to participate in games and learn more about the Magnet journey, while traveling through different “destinations.” The fair generated tremendous excitement and deepened appreciation for the incredible journey KP SRO is undertaking toward Magnet recognition. 

In July, the committee launched the “Magnet Monday” communication and event series, a weekly initiative open to all employees. These events served as both an educational opportunity and a celebration of how KP SRO exemplifies the Magnet Model components. Highlights included:

  • Farmer’s Market 
  • Coffee, Tea, and EBP 
  • Soaring to New Heights for Professional Development 
  • Mentoring for Success 
  • Tea with the CNE 
  • Día de los Muertos 
  • And the ever-popular, Puppy Power Hour! 

These events not only brought our medical center together but also celebrated the incredible ways KP SRO exemplifies the qualities that make it Magnet-worthy. The enthusiasm and engagement of our team reflects the collective pride and dedication in the pursuit of Magnet recognition. 

Magnet Site Visit in Santa RosaIn November, our team had the incredible honor of hosting a 3-day Magnet Site Visit—truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This visit marked the final step in our four-year journey toward Magnet designation. It was a chance for us to showcase what makes KP SRO not only the best place to work but also the best place to receive care. 

The visit was a celebration of our accomplishments, where we shared the story of our journey and highlighted the outstanding work of our interdisciplinary teams, who make a difference every day. It was our opportunity to tell the appraisers why we are deserving of the highest credential a healthcare organization can achieve. 

Our medical center was transformed to reflect our “Passport to Sonoma County” theme, capturing the essence of the region with displays of the Redwood Forest, the rolling vineyards, and the Sonoma Coast. We even had hot air balloons. More importantly, this was a moment for our entire team to participate in welcoming the appraisers and showcasing the vibrant culture of KP SRO. It was our chance to WOW the appraisers and give them a first-hand experience of the unique and inspirational environment we’ve built here. 

The journey to this point has not been easy. Over the past few years, our team has faced fires, hospital evacuations, and the challenges of COVID-19. Yet, despite these obstacles, we have persevered, coming through each challenge stronger than ever. This resilience is what truly sets us apart, and we were so proud to share our story with the appraisers during this momentous visit.  

Following our successful Magnet Site Visit, we now await the results which we expect to receive in early 2025. As we wait, our team continues to celebrate the incredible contributions of all our Magnet Ambassadors and the dedication of the entire KP SRO team. Every step of this journey has been a testament to our collective effort, and we are proud of everything we have accomplished together.

Sacramento Medical Center is among the nation’s Comprehensive Stroke Centers

Sacramento Medical Center has once again proven its excellence in advanced stroke care. The Joint Commission has recertified it as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, a distinction held by only 211 hospitals nationwide. Since earning this prestigious designation in 2017, the hospital has maintained it, solidifying its role as a major referral center for advanced stroke care locally and within Northern California. 

A rigorous review by the Joint Commission surveyors followed the Comprehensive Stroke Center designation. The survey team noted several best practices, including: 

  • Physician outreach to stroke patients 7 days post-discharge. 
  • A dedicated patient care coordinator and social worker. 
  • The Wellness After Stroke class and journey to Magnet status. 
  • A pilot in the Neuro Unit to provide patients with blood pressure cuffs and education upon discharge. 

This achievement reflects the hospital’s strong culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, which is essential to delivering and maintaining the highest standard of care for patients requiring advanced medical and surgical stroke treatment. Jason Murray, MSN, RN, Quality Nurse Consultant for Stroke, highlighted the staff’s dedication to quality stroke care, stating, “Our team is committed to delivering exceptional outcomes for stroke patients. Maintaining a prestigious designation requires us to adhere to and exceed the highest standards of advanced stroke care. We are not just checking boxes—our patient outcomes are the true measure of our success.” 

Neuro Clinical Nurse Specialist Almaz Haile, MSN, RN, CCNS, CNS, highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, adding, “Every department plays a critical role—from the Emergency Department, Interventional Radiology, and Pharmacy to the ICU and Transport teams. This coordinated effort ensures we deliver care promptly and effectively when every second counts.” 

5.-A-day-away-for-leadership-development-#1

A day away for leadership development

The Patient Care Services (PCS) Day Away is a quarterly event designed for Assistant Nurse Managers, Managers, House Supervisors, Nursing Professional Development Specialists, and Directors to engage in learning, reflection, and team-building activities. Led by the Chief Nursing Executive, this event serves as a professional and leadership development platform through networking, skill-building, and exposure to diverse perspectives. 

During the Day Away, participants take part in interactive learning activities, including presentations, role-playing exercises, and team-building sessions. Leaders are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones by presenting on unfamiliar topics, conducting literature reviews, and sharing leadership insights. Departments are tasked with facilitating Day Away sessions, creatively enhancing each event through unique themes, games, activities, and interactive elements. 

Guest speakers—accomplished leaders from diverse industries—are invited to share their leadership journeys, providing new perspectives beyond health care. These talks highlight the challenges, inspirations, and sense of purpose inherent in leadership roles. 

Nurse leaders may face unique situations daily, from addressing clinical questions to interpreting policies. In the Day Away, a scenario based on an event that occurred in the hospital is presented and each participating team is required to do a role-playing on how they will address the scenario. These exercises are both instructive and entertaining, allowing participants to actively practice critical skills such as conflict resolution, communication, and providing feedback in a fun way. After each role-play, the directors facilitate debriefing sessions to offer constructive feedback and refine leadership strategies for addressing the scenarios presented. 

“Regardless of your position or years of experience, professional and leadership development is an ongoing process for all leaders,” says George Tutu, MSN, RN, Nursing Professional Development Director. “This event is also a valuable platform for nurse leaders to share perspectives and solutions to issues impacting their departments and staff. Each unit leaders faces unique situations but there are commonalities in the principles used on how situations are addressed or approached.”  

 

4.-Honoring-Nurses-Stories-of-Resilience,-Compassion,-and-Cultural-Heritage-in-Healthcare

Honoring nurses: Stories of resilience, compassion, and cultural heritage in health care 

Filipinos comprise 1% of the U.S. population. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Filipino nurses working on the frontlines, even though they made up only 4% of the nursing workforce, comprised 30% of COVID-19 nurse deaths despite facing a resurgence of anti-Asian hate.  

In the celebration of the Asian Pacific Islander (API) Month and Nurses Week, the Greater Sacramento Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity hosted a special event to honor the contributions of Filipino American nurses. On May 15, 2024, Kaiser Permanente employees and physicians were invited to a complimentary screening of the documentary Nurse Unseen, a film highlighting Filipino nurses’ experiences during the pandemic. The documentary examined the historical context that led to the substantial presence of Filipino nurses in the U.S. The film also highlighted stories of humanity and resilience during the pandemic.   

Following the screening, a virtual panel discussion was conducted, moderated by Esperanza Chavez, MSA, BSN, RN, and the Chief Nursing Executive of Sacramento. Chavez reflected on the film and Filipino American nurses’ contributions to the U.S. health care system. “This documentary brings to light the stories of minority nurses, who have long been part of the backbone of health care in the U.S. Their dedication, resilience, and compassion are often unsung, but their impact is immeasurable. “It also highlights the stories of nurses who bravely cared for patients during the pandemic despite the uncertainties and how their culture shaped their resilience.”  

 The panel also featured the film’s director and producer, as well as Sacramento Medical Center’s Ace Delos Santos BSN, RN, and Staff Nurse IV -5th floor. During the discussion, Ace shared the challenges faced by Filipino Nurses at the bedside, away from their families, and facing the impact of the pandemic on nursing care. The event offered an opportunity to reflect on stories about resilience, culture, and diversity in nursing.
