Relaunch Professional Governance Council structure and processes in alignment with Regional and Best Practice Standards

Assess existing nursing recognition processes

Focus on RN engagement survey

Accomplishments

July – Re-launched PGC with applications for all areas with a focus to create 8 new units councils and relaunching of our 4 Core Councils.

August – All 12 Councils selected the chair and chair elect and confirmed their core council representatives. 60 front-line nurse leaders supported by 20 Director/Manager nurse leaders!

August – AMC launched HEREOS Committee with all areas represented and dissolved Quality A&B to align it closely as the workgroup under Quality & Safety Core Council

September – RN Engagement Survey shared and Units and PGC began action planning 3 goals with the “little bit more” as our focus areas.

October – Launched S-O-A-R QR code to showcase organizational achievement and recognitions where anyone can share stories and upload pictures of clinical excellence, professional practice enhancements, exceptional care experiences, and professional growth.

November – Launched AMC Nursing Recognition Committee to focus on Daisy, PETAL, & Lotus Award to allow Professional Development Core Council to focus on org-wide improvement of Professional Development. Recognitions and Retention will be of strategic focus for Coordinating & Executive Council going forward.

December – All councils have established pillar aligned goals and will be prepared for 2025 and our upcoming Nursing Strategic Planning Retreat in January!

Transformational Leadership

The Antioch Medical Center’s Professional Governance Council structure was relaunched in July, 2024. 8 new Unit Councils, ensuring diversity, inclusion, and equity of membership across all nursing areas of the Medical Center were launched. The Professional Governance Council will lead a model of shared decision making and will empower nurses to enhance and innovate their practice. The HEROES committee has been aligned with the Quality and Safety Core Council and AMC Nursing Recognition Committee to support meaningful recognition for nurses. 60 front-line staff nurses joined the councils and are supported by the Nursing leadership team. Plans for a 5th Core Council focused on Practice and Informatics is in progress and will begin in January 2025.

Accomplished nurse leaders named fellows of the American Academy of Nursing

Two Kaiser Permanente Northern California nurse leaders were inducted in the 2024 Class of Fellows of The American Academy of Nursing at the Academy’s annual Health Policy Conference held recently in Washington, DC.

Among the group of a distinguished nurse leaders being inducted for their substantial and sustained impact on health and health care were Sharon Hampton, PhD, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, WCSI Caritas Coach®, Chief Nurse Executive at the San Leandro Medical Center (pictured left above); and Elizabeth Scruth, PhD, MPH, RN, CNS, CCRN, CCNS, FCCM, FCNS CPHQ, Northern California Executive Director of Clinical Quality Programs, Data Analytics and Tele-Critical Care (pictured right above).

Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) represent nursing’s most accomplished leaders in policy, research, administration, practice, and academia.

Hampton is recognized for her lifelong dedication to advancing equity, inclusion, diversity, and belonging (EIDB) principles in health care, and her unwavering commitment to being a voice and advocate for historically excluded populations. Her research exploring how nurses contribute to inequities has garnered national and internal recognition.

As a nurse leader, Hampton is committed to transformational and inclusive leadership. Her work embedding EIDB principles and the Watson Caring Science Theory into nursing education/practice, provide nurses the common language to achieve their higher purpose and transform their practice from knowing and doing to providing the caring-healing environment.

“My life’s work, rooted in my PhD research, is centered on ameliorating health inequities,” said Hampton. “The FAAN nomination and induction represents the culmination of my efforts to address the complex challenges within our health systems and to co-create a more equitable and caring future in health care.”

Scruth, who has been with Kaiser Permanente for over 30 years, said the designation as a FAAN is humbling. “I am very honored to have been recognized and acknowledged for my contributions to nursing and the scientific community,” she said. “The accomplishments, outcomes and level of impact required to have demonstrated to be inducted is significant and takes many years to achieve.”

Scruth’s career as a nurse began at the bedside in the ICU. She became a Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist and served in various leadership roles within the organization before joining the Northern California Quality team. She has also served on the Certification Board of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses for 8 years.

Throughout her nursing career spanning 2 continents, Scruth has continued to focus on research, including co-authoring published international guidelines for family-centered care in the neonatal, pediatric, and adult ICU, and best practices in tele-critical care.

Congratulations Drs. Hampton and Scruth!

Core Council Chairs

Thomas Booth, BSN, RN, PCCN
Chair, Magnet Ambassadors

“This year, our council made significant progress in fostering a supportive environment for nurses and health care professionals. In 2024, we proudly formed the Magnet Ambassadors, who played a key role in supporting the RN Excellence Survey to gather valuable feedback on nurses’ experiences and practices. Additionally, we collaborated with administration to successfully plan and execute a joint Nurses and Hospitals Week, celebrating the dedication and hard work of our health care team.”

Maria Cabrera, ADN, RN
Chair, Professional Development Core Council

“In 2024, the Professional Development Council prioritized membership growth and conducted a comprehensive house-wide survey to inform our strategic focus for 2025.”

Gladys Miller, BSN, RN, PHN
Chair, Quality and Safety Core Council

“The Nursing Professional Governance now includes the Quality and Safety Council. The Quality and Safety co-chairs include Falls, HAP, CAUTI, CLABSI, HAPI, and C-Diff. A few of the accomplishments include updating and completing the charter. We have trained the co-chairs on data review resources, how to use an A3, and how to run a successful meeting. This council was established to ensure a system of shared decision-making and accountability between all levels of staff.”

Zahra “Minoo” Nouri, BSN, RN, CEN
Chair, EBP, Innovation, and Research Core Council

“In October, we attended the Magnet Conference, where we explored various posters and evidence-based practice (EBP) projects from hospitals nationwide, including notable initiatives by Northern California Kaiser Permanente. I participated in the KP/UCSF EBP Strategic Planning Session as part of a group. This session will serve as our guiding framework as we move into 2025.Under the guidance of Gilbert, we formed a council comprising Zahra Minoo Nouri (Chair), Alex Fogli (CNS), and Autumn Argent (Nursing Advisor). We have successfully recruited six additional members and are ready to begin advancing EBP Initiatives.”

Abigail Velez, ADN, RN
Chair, Care Experience and Caring Science Core Council

“To enhance patient care, we integrated the Care Experience and Caring Science Core Council into Nursing Professional Governance. This new structure and support system facilitated an Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) project involving multiple Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles. This project centered on optimizing patient goal setting through the effective use of communication boards. Concurrently, we initiated another EBP project aimed at implementing updated care boards across all Adult-Patient Care Services (Adult-PCS). We are immensely proud of these achievements, as they signify a significant step forward in improving the quality of care we provide to our members.”
