Empowering nurses through certification

Under the leadership of Nursing Professional Development Specialist Narlyn Llamas, MSN, MBA, RN, GERO-BC, the Kaiser Permanente Roseville Voice of Nursing (VON) Professional Development Core Council organized a successful Gerontological Board Certification (GERO-BC) review course.

With support from Chief Nurse Executive Debbie Reitter, DNP, RN, CNS, NEA-BC, and the Nurse Scholars Academy, the course received funding to cover the instructor’s fees. The two-day course, open to nurses from all 21 Northern California medical centers, included a watch party option for Roseville participants to actively engage. A total of 124 nurses from across the region participated, with 44 from Roseville.

Since completing the course, 14 Roseville nurses have passed the GERO-BC exam. Narlyn’s commitment to nursing excellence extends beyond gerontological care, as she has also led review courses for certifications in maternal child health, including RNC-OB, C-EBM, dual RNC-OB and C-EFM, and RNC-MNN. Most recently, she facilitated the Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) review course, attended by 38 Roseville nurses. These initiatives reflect Narlyn’s dedication to advancing the professional development of nurses and enhancing the quality of care provided to patients.

Kenya mission

Nurses and physicians provide care in Kenya

In September 2024, two Kaiser Roseville nurses, Jina Gloor, RN and Cherie Capagli RN, along with three physicians, traveled to Kenya to deliver essential health care to rural communities.

Sierra Leone

Promoting safe birth in Sierra Leone

In May 2024, a dedicated group from Kaiser Roseville Medical Center, including a KP midwife, two KP physicians, Jenna Ricks-Cosens, MSN, RN, PHN, and Jane Jach, MSN, RN, PHN, RNC-OB, EBP-C, traveled to Sierra Leone to train local healthcare providers.

The team was led by Joanie Seacrist, CNM, a certified nurse midwife from Roseville and founder of Hawa’s Hope, an organization dedicated to improving maternal health in Sierra Leone, which has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in West Africa. Sponsored by nurse leaders at Roseville Medical Center, the team provided expert training through lectures, hands-on skills, and simulation exercises at midwifery schools. Topics covered included team communication, how to protect the health of an expectant mom, and managing complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Initially, the team planned to reach 200 participants, but the response exceeded expectations, drawing nearly 300 attendees, including physician residents. Pre- and post-workshop tests showed a 13.6% increase in knowledge, reflecting the success of the initiative in enhancing maternal care and safety.

Supporting the future of nursing

Mentoring is a hallmark of professional practice and transformational leadership that inspires, empowers, and develops leaders at all levels of nursing. Several nurse leaders supported the future of nursing by serving as a mentor to nurses new to their practice.

Improving care experience: Care Experience Circle initiative

In late 2023, Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center’s “Likelihood to Recommend” score was below target, highlighting an opportunity to enhance the patient experience.

In response, Associate Chief Nurse Executive Gertrude Tiangco Alba, DNP, MSA, RN, and Area Experience Leader Erica Menzer, LCSW, CPXP launched the Care Experience Circle meetings in early 2024. These meetings brought together adult inpatient service line leaders to review evidence-based interventions such as authentic hourly rounding, nursing communication via bedside handoff, and the principles of nurse leader rounds, predictive rounding, and the hospital’s care connection bundle. By May 2024, the initiative expanded to include the emergency department and maternal-child inpatient service line leaders. Through these collaborative sessions, individual unit data, best practices, and improvement strategies were shared. As a result of these efforts, Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center’s “Likelihood to Recommend” scores improved, successfully meeting the target and demonstrating the positive impact of the Care Experience Circle initiative on patient satisfaction.

10 years of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery

In 2014, the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program launched in Northern California, and traditional surgical care as we knew it was changed forever.  The principles of ERAS include multimodal analgesia, early mobilization, maintenance of adequate nutrition, and active patient participation in their care.

Multi-site studies inform nursing practice across region

Kaiser Permanente nurses at all practice levels are encouraged to engage in practice scholarship such as utilizing Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) and research scholarship to improve the delivery and quality of care.

One way to be encourage our nurses is to have them be involved in a multi-site study. Multi-site studies across the region use the same study protocol simultaneously providing Kaiser Permanente nurses to collect data from a wider and more diverse population. Multisite studies involve having a lead site (PI or Co PI) to help manage the project. In 2024, we had two major multi-site studies:

The Re Brilliancy study was to assess whether the Re Brilliancy workshop centered on Jean Watson’s Caring Science Theory helps provide authentic connection by:

  • increasing compassion satisfaction and self-compassion in bedside nurses and nurse leaders.
  • Decreasing burnout and secondary traumatic stress in this population group.

The conclusion of this study showed participants reported a sense of belongingness and a non-judgmental environment, with quantitative results showing significant improvements in compassion satisfaction, self-kindness and common humanity.

KP Cares 2.0 was another multi-site study. Healthcare workers’ careers are both physically and emotionally demanding. High rates of burnout were recognized before the global health crisis, and the pandemic has only added additional stressors, daily disruptions, and upended routine hospital care practices.

The research objective was to determine the impact of a new program to enhance resiliency by combining three approaches Caring Science (CS), HeartMath (HM), and Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity (EID). The review of the resiliency and “burnout” literature indicated that there is limited evidence with low validity and quality addressing the mental health of nurses, particularly for those working the frontline during infectious disease outbreaks. A systematic review of resilience and behavioral health interventions found limited evidence to support specific interventions aimed at enhancing the mental health nurses, thus research was needed.

This is a unique approach combining several powerful interventions into a single program. The preliminary results indicate a promising direction to address common stressors in the healthcare provider’s work environment. Limitations include convenience sampling. Advantages include in-person sessions taught by certified trainers. This program will continue to be tested and expanded within other hospitals in the Northern California region. Approval has been granted for the CSA to be implemented in Kaiser Permanente facilities nationwide. Satisfaction with the program will be tracked and reported to ensure sustainability.
