Walking-Ventilated-Patient-in-the-ICU

Early mobility crucial to short- and long-term recovery

Walking ventilated critical care patients, also known as early mobility, is a crucial intervention that offers numerous benefits for both short- and long-term recovery. Prolonged bed rest in the ICU can lead to muscle atrophy, including respiratory and skeletal muscles, as well as complications like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), and ICU-acquired weakness. Early ambulation helps maintain muscle strength, improve circulation, enhance lung function, and reduce the risk of these complications. It also promotes better oxygenation, reduces the likelihood of lung collapse (atelectasis), and supports cardiovascular health.

Beyond physical benefits, walking ventilated patients improves mental well-being by reducing the risk of delirium, anxiety, and depression, fostering a sense of engagement and independence. Studies show that mobilizing ventilated patients can shorten ICU and hospital stays, accelerate recovery, and reduce the long-term effects of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), which impacts physical, cognitive, and emotional health. With proper precautions and a multidisciplinary team to ensure safety, early mobility is an essential practice that significantly improves patient outcomes and quality of life.

Redesigned Patient Care Services orientation

In early Spring 2024 the Nursing Professional Development Specialist collaborated to redesign the existing process to align with adult learning theory. Patient Care Services Orientation for clinical personnel is now spread over a 3-day period. Orientees are informed each day of PCSO will build on and reinforce the materials in different but important ways.

Senior-Surgical-Care-Program

The Geri-Cart as part of the Senior Surgical Care program

The Geriatric Cart, or Geri-Cart, was created as part of the Senior Surgical Care Program (SSCP) on 3 Med/Surg at Kaiser Permanente San Jose. The SSCP is a care initiative by Kaiser Permanente Northern California designed to improve the quality outcomes for patients aged 75 and older who are considering surgery.

One of the program’s primary goals is to reduce post-surgical cognitive and functional decline. The Geri-Cart was developed to store items that can assist with mental exercises, re-orientation, and delirium prevention while patients are hospitalized. Initially intended for SSCP patients, the Geri-Cart has proven beneficial to the broader older adult population on 3 Med/Surg, including those hospitalized for reasons other than surgery. Nurses on the 3rd floor now utilize the items in the Geri-Cart when they believe it will add value to the care of their older adult patients.

New-Hospital

New San Jose Medical Center breaks ground

In 2024, Kaiser Permanente broke ground on a new 303-bed hospital at its San Jose site, set to open in 2029. The project involves demolishing the existing 50-year-old hospital and constructing a state-of-the-art facility. Designed by Stance Architecture, the new hospital will feature a six-story building, a 35,000-square-foot energy center, and a five-level parking structure. The energy center and service yard are integral to the project’s focus on sustainability and operational efficiency, aligning with the Magnet Model’s transformational leadership. The new hospital will enhance healthcare services in the San Jose community by providing modern facilities and improved patient care. Although the project will result in the removal of 130 trees, it represents a significant transformation of the local healthcare landscape. By 2029, the project will reflect Kaiser Permanente’s long-term commitment to high-quality healthcare and embody transformational leadership principles, driving innovation and community impact.
