South San Francisco nurses strengthen Daily Management System

From managers to staff nurses KP SSF refreshed daily readiness pre shift huddles to elevate communication accountability and patient safety.

In September 2025, Assistant Nurse Managers and Nurse Managers at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco (KP SSF) came together for a “Refresh and Rally” session focused on strengthening their Daily Management System (DMS) practices and leadership skills. Guided by the belief that effective management begins with daily engagement at the frontlines, nursing leaders used this session to reconnect with DMS principles — visual management, daily readiness huddles, standard work, and problem-solving — to ensure alignment across teams and sustain operational excellence.

The DMS framework provides a structured approach to managing daily operations and identifying improvement opportunities in real time. During the “Refresh and Rally,” leaders shared success stories, exchanged best practices, and refined how information flows from frontline huddles to leadership discussions. With support from Clinical Adult Nursing Director Michelle B. McIlwain, MBA, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, NEA-BC; RN Magnet Program Director Juan Ibanez, MSN, RN, CENP, NPD-BC, CNOR; Area Portfolio Leader Michael Espinoza; and Clinical Innovation Deployment Leader Scott Brown, the event emphasized the vital link between leadership visibility, staff engagement, and patient safety outcomes.

Building on that momentum, in November 2025, staff nurses, who are encouraged to lead their unit’s pre-shift daily management huddles, volunteered to become DMS Champions. These champions participated in a specialized training session designed to strengthen their confidence in facilitating discussions, identifying opportunities for improvement, and celebrating unit accomplishments. Many nurses shared how empowering it felt to have their voices heard and to inspire their peers in fostering a safe and supportive work environment.

Through these collective efforts, KP SSF continues to strengthen a culture of continuous improvement where every nurse, whether a leader or a frontline caregiver, plays an active role in advancing operational excellence, teamwork, and patient-centered care across the organization.
