Magnet leadership retreats: Building a foundation of excellence

Nursing leaders gather at Magnet retreats to celebrate excellence, share stories, and strengthen our collective journey toward designation.

In July 2025, Kaiser Permanente Roseville launched its first Magnet retreat, led by Chief Nurse Executive Debbie Reitter, DNP, RN, CNS, NEA-BC. The event brought together directors and managers for an engaging four-hour session, and was designed to deepen understanding of Magnet designation, what it means for our nurses, our patients, and our organization, and to energize leaders as we advance on this journey.

The success of this inaugural event sparked a series of additional retreats, expanding participation to assistant nurse managers, house supervisors, quality nurse consultants, and the nursing professional development team. Each session provided a comprehensive overview of Magnet principles and our progress toward achieving this prestigious recognition. Leaders also explored the importance of peer feedback, which fosters a culture of collaboration and professional development. A highlight of the day was story mapping, where attendees shared impactful examples from their departments. These stories will help shape the narratives that demonstrate nursing excellence in the Roseville Magnet document.

Beyond learning, the retreats created space for connection, inspiration, and shared purpose — strengthening our collective commitment to delivering exceptional care. Through these retreats, Kaiser Permanente Roseville is fostering transformational leadership and empowering nurse leaders to champion Magnet principles. Together, we continue to build a culture of excellence that benefits both our caregivers and the patients we serve.
