In 2025, our commitment to staff and patient safety took a significant step forward with the formation of the Safe Patient Handling Committee. This multidisciplinary group was established to ensure that our hospital is equipped not only with the appropriate patient handling equipment but also with the knowledge and training necessary for its effective use.
At the committee’s inaugural meeting, members identified a critical gap in staff familiarity with the hospital’s evacuation chairs, devices essential for safely transporting patients during emergency evacuations. While these chairs are strategically placed throughout the facility, many staff members had limited experience operating them, posing a potential risk during high-stress situations.
To address this, the committee organized a hands-on drill focused on the evacuation chair use. Representatives from various units and disciplines across the hospital participated, creating a collaborative learning environment that emphasized both teamwork and practical skill-building. Staff had the opportunity to practice deploying and maneuvering the chairs, ask questions, and build confidence in their ability to respond effectively in an emergency.
This initiative not only highlighted the importance of ongoing training but also underscored the value of cross-departmental collaboration in promoting a culture of safety. The committee plans to continue identifying training needs and equipment gaps, ensuring that all staff are prepared to handle patient movement safely and efficiently.
By proactively addressing these challenges, the Safe Patient Handling Committee is helping to create a safer environment for both patients and caregivers, where preparedness and confidence go hand in hand.
