The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) recently granted a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence to the Sacramento Medical Center ICU, a significant milestone toward exceptional patient care and a healthy work environment.
The award honors physicians, nurses, and staff who improve patient outcomes and align with AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards. Units earning this national recognition meet rigorous criteria consistent with the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and the National Quality Healthcare Award.
AACN President Jennifer Adamski, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC, CCRN, FCCM, commended the ICU team’s collaboration and commitment to excellence, noting that Beacon units “serve as role models to others on their journey to outstanding patient and family care.”
The award evaluation measures five categories: Leadership, Staffing and Engagement, Communication and Learning, Evidence-Based Practice, and Outcomes, benchmarking each against national Beacon standards.
“This recognition reflects the dedication and leadership of our ICU team in ensuring the best care possible,” said Jay Robinson, SVP and Area Manager, Sacramento and South Sacramento.
For patients and families, the Beacon Award represents safer, higher-quality care and improved satisfaction. For nurses, it affirms a supportive, collaborative, and high-morale environment. “Being recognized as a Beacon ICU shows that the quality of our care is tied directly to the quality of our physicians and nurses,” said Rick Vitangcol, MD, Physician in Chief, Sacramento.
Established in 2003, the Beacon Award for Excellence provides a national framework for achieving superior outcomes and sustaining healthy work environments. Learn more at www.aacn.org/beacon
