Nursing professional governance at Vacaville Medical Center

Nurses are leading projects that elevate nursing standards of care.

The 10 Unit Practice Councils are driving meaningful changes by focusing on safety, quality, care experience, and the nursing professional environment. Through evidence-based practice, nurses are leading projects that elevate standards of care and strengthen professional governance.

Around sixty nurses regularly attend governance meetings, creating a vibrant forum to share successes and lessons learned. Collaboration extends beyond nursing, as teams work closely with physicians, dietary services, trauma specialists, psychologists, and engineers to improve both inpatient and outpatient care.

The Evidence-Based Practice/Research Core Council, Professional Development Core Council, Quality/Safety Core Council, Care Experience Core Council, the Professional Nursing Excellence Council, and the Magnet Steering Committee help connect frontline practice with organizational strategy. Together, these councils foster a culture of continuous improvement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a shared commitment to advancing nursing practice and optimizing patient outcomes. By championing these efforts, the councils ensure that every nurse has a voice in shaping a professional environment grounded in evidence, innovation, and excellence.
