Fueling excellence, KP Sacramento nurses lead through inquiry and innovation

Kaiser Permanente Sacramento nurses showcased their work across local, regional, and national stages.

At Kaiser Permanente Sacramento Medical Center (KP SAC), nurses are supported in transforming inquiry into innovation. The Professional Governance Council’s Evidence-Based Practice and Research Council provides clinical nurses with mentorship and guidance to disseminate quality improvement (QI), research, and evidence-based practice (EBP) projects at local, regional, and national forums. This culture of excellence is further promoted through the Annual Exemplary Professional Practice Exhibit, where nurses from various departments present scholarly work and innovations that enhance patient care.

“Many presenters are first-timers,” stated Magnet Program Director Joel Mallari, DNP, RN, ACNS-BC, NPD-BC, NEA-BC. “Our goal is to help nurses share the value and impact of their work, not only for recognition but as a professional imperative.” To support nurse development, the Council offers dedicated clinic hours that provide individualized mentorship in abstract development, poster design, and presentation delivery.

At the 2025 Kaiser Permanente Northern California Research and Innovation Academy Conference, Decades of Insights: A Research Journey of Excellence, held May 14–15 in Pleasanton, KP SAC received regional recognition for submitting the highest number of abstracts, totaling 30. Of these, nine were selected for Ignite podium presentations and eight for poster presentations, demonstrating a culture of nursing inquiry and professional engagement. Many participants presenting at a conference was a career milestone.

“I never imagined I would attend a conference and present my work,” said Maureen Coloma, BSN, RN, ICU clinical nurse and first-time presenter. “This experience showed me that our everyday bedside practice can inspire and educate others.”

Chief Nurse Executive Esperanza Chavez, MSA, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, commended the presenters for their dedication. “These projects reflect our nurses’ commitment to advancing excellence, sharing evidence-based solutions, and improving care for our patients and communities.”

Congratulations to KP SAC Nurses who have presented their work at various professional conferences:
