Eye Surgery Center receives AORN Go Clear Award™ for advancing surgical safety

The Rancho Cordova Eye Surgery Center has earned the prestigious AORN Go Clear Award™, a national recognition for eliminating surgical smoke

The Rancho Cordova Eye Surgery Center has received the AORN Go Clear Award™, a national recognition that honors facilities for their commitment to eliminating surgical smoke, which is a recognized operating room hazard containing harmful toxins, carcinogens, and particulates.

Through comprehensive implementation of AORN’s evidence-based smoke evacuation standards, the team protected both patients and surgical staff, thereby supporting Kaiser Permanente’s organizational goal of zero harm and high reliability in patient safety.

Collaboration among nurses, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and sterile processing staff enabled the center to achieve full compliance with AORN guidelines and to establish sustainable, smoke-free surgical practices.

“This recognition is a testament to our nurses’ leadership and advocacy in creating a safer surgical environment,” said Esperanza Chavez, MSA, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nurse Executive, Sacramento. “Our perioperative teams have demonstrated that excellence in safety extends beyond outcomes; it is fundamentally about protecting people.

“The Go Clear Award reflects the dedication and precision of our surgical teams at Rancho Cordova,” added Jay Robinson, PsyD, MBA, Senior Vice President and Area Manager, Sacramento and South Sacramento. “Their commitment to maintaining a smoke-free operating environment enhances the safety of both patients and staff, exemplifying our focus on quality, safety, and a culture of excellence.”
