Clinical Nurse Specialist honored for excellence in innovations and technology

Krystal Pombo’s creative solutions are transforming geriatric care and earning statewide recognition.

Kaiser Permanente Fresno Clinical Nurse Specialist II Krystal Pombo, MSN, RN, CNS, AGCNS-BC, received the statewide “Excellence in Innovation and Technology in Professional Nursing” award from the Association of California Nurse Leaders at its annual conference in February.

Krystal’s work demonstrates how innovation can transform patient care. She has championed evidence-based practices to improve outcomes for Fresno’s growing geriatric population, ensuring that educational interventions for clinical teams are grounded in the latest research and best practices.

One highlight of her achievement is the creation of a delirium-themed escape room, developed in collaboration with the Geriatric Committee. This interactive experience simulates what a geriatric patient sees, feels, and hears, helping caregivers better understand and respond to the challenges these patients face. The project has drawn statewide attention as a creative approach to empathy-driven care and professional education.

“I was shocked to receive this award,” Krystal said. “It’s an honor to represent Kaiser Permanente and showcase the innovative work happening in Fresno. People across the country want to know our ‘secret sauce’ — how we engage staff and deliver measurable outcomes at the bedside.”

Krystal has presented at numerous conferences, positioning Kaiser Permanente Fresno as a leader in geriatric care innovation. Her efforts underscore a commitment to improving quality of life for seniors — our fastest-growing population.

“This is our future,” Krystal said. “These patients are our parents, grandparents, and community members. By leading in geriatric care, we ensure better outcomes for them and, eventually, for us.”
