2025 Research and Innovation Academy

Nurses from KP Vallejo showcase groundbreaking nurse-led innovation and research excellence at the 2025 Research and Innovation Academy.

The Research and Innovation Academy (RIA) hosted its 2nd Annual two‑day Symposium at the Marriott in Pleasanton, CA, on May 8–9, 2025. The event highlighted nurse‑led, evidence‑based projects and research studies from all 22 Kaiser Permanente (KP) facilities across the Northern California region. Since its launch last year, participation has tripled, and continued growth suggests the RIA may soon need a larger venue to accommodate future attendees.

This year, more than 120 projects were submitted for podium or poster presentations. KP Vallejo was well represented, featuring multiple poster presenters and one podium presentation.

  • Marta Ryan‑Suarez, RN, Emergency Department, presented her project on the “Ultrasound‑Guided Peripheral IV Insertion Program.”
  • Catherine Hernandez, BSN, RN, CEN, Gastrointestinal Unit, presented “The Good Catch Initiative.”
  • Keshni Lal, DNP, RN, SNIV, Lactation Unit, presented “Implementation of Skin‑to‑Skin Contact Within the First Hour of Life Post–Cesarean Section to Increase Exclusive Breastfeeding Rates at Hospital Discharge.”
  • Samantha P. Avecilla, MSN, CRRN, CNL, Kaiser Foundation Rehabilitation Center, delivered a podium presentation on behalf of her research team: “Strengthening Relationship Mutuality and Lowering Stress in the Caregiver and Care Recipient With a Disabling Injury or Illness Through Gardening: A Mixed‑Methods Study.” The research team included Katelynn Campbell, CTRS, RTC; Dr. Anita Catlin, PhD, FNP, CNL, FAAN; and Dr. Michelle Camicia, PhD, RN, FAAN.
