Successful transition of cardiac patients to specialty unit

While formally known as 5C, many staff affectionately refer to the unit as “the CPU”—a nod to its role as the heart of cardiac procedures at

In August 2025, Kaiser Permanente San Francisco successfully transitioned its Structural Heart Advanced Recovery Pathway (SHARP) Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) patients from 1North (1N) to 5Center – The Cardiac Procedure Unit (5C-CPU). This milestone expanded 5C-CPU’s repertoire of advanced cardiac procedures, which already includes cardiac catheterizations, electrophysiology cases, and interventional radiology. The team is honored to now play a role in another life-changing intervention for patients.

The transition was smooth and successful thanks to the dedication and collaboration of both the 1N and 5C-CPU teams. Joint in-service trainings and clinical support ensured staff readiness, with 1N nurses providing additional assistance during the first two weeks to help ease the change. Strong support from department leadership and the TAVR team further reinforced the effort, ensuring patients continued to receive safe, high-quality care throughout the process.

To support the expanded scope of care, 5C-CPU also received additional equipment enhancing efficiency and readiness for complex procedures. These resources, combined with the team’s commitment to excellence, strengthened the unit’s ability to deliver seamless care.

The transition also highlighted the pride and identity of the team.

This achievement reflects the power of collaboration, preparation, and shared purpose. By embracing new responsibilities and supporting one another, the 5C-CPU team has ensured that patients undergoing TAVR receive compassionate, expert care in a unit designed to meet their needs. The successful transition stands as a testament to the strength of teamwork and the ongoing commitment to advancing cardiac care.
