SSC nurses shine at Research and Innovation Academy Conference

Innovation in action: SSC nurses reduce falls, advance IV access, and champion high reliability in care.

On May 14, 2025, nurses from Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento (SSC) attended the Research Innovation Academy Annual Evidence-Based Practice conference. This conference showcases the work of all participating KP hospitals from the Northern California region. The conference is a great opportunity for nurses to showcase their work either through a short oral presentation or via a professional poster presentation. Our KP SSC team stepped up to the challenge and had two professional poster presentations and three oral presentations.

Representatives from SSC were Amber L Glukhenkiy, MSN, APRN-CNS, ACCNS-AG, CCRN; Maria Mia Sindayen, BSN, RN; Andrew Bilog, BSN, RN; Pamela Jagur, BSN, RN; Harpreet Kooner, MBA, BSN, RN, CPHQ, HACP-CMS; and Ericson (Alvin) Fernando, MSN, RN, CNL.

ICU nurse Maria Mia Sindayen, RN, gave a riveting oral presentation on the ICU’s ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous (USPIV) program. This program has proved fruitful with more than 150 USPIV cannulations, demonstrating a 90% first attempt success rate. The primary goal of this project was to reduce the standard utilization rate of central venous catheters in patients who are deemed a difficult intravenous access patient. This project was approved by the Kaiser Permanente national research office.

Another ICU nurse, Andrew Bilog, RN, also provided an oral presentation on utilization of the tailored intervention for patient safety (TIPS) board. Following focused education in the ICU, data comparison for 2023 and 2024 showed significant reduction in falls with and without injury. The final oral presentation was by Adult Services Nursing Director, Alvin Fernando, and Director of Quality & Safety Improvement, Harpreet Kooner. Their presentation focused on applying high reliability organization concepts to organize nurse leaders. This project demonstrated a 40% reduction in quality metrics throughout SSC.

Two poster presentations were showcased at the symposium. The first poster presented, by Pamela Jagur, RN discussed Sepsis and the importance of empowering communities through education and prevention. The second poster, by Amber Glukhenkiy, RN, talked about the power of mentorship for new graduate clinical nurse specialists. This work demonstrates a commitment to excellence that is apparent throughout all nurses who work at KP South Sacramento. We are incredibly proud of this work!
