Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco proudly showcased its spirit of inquiry and innovation at the 2025 Kaiser Permanente Northern California Research and Innovation (RIA) Conference, held May 14–15 in Pleasanton, California. This annual event brought together nurses from 21 Kaiser Permanente Northern California medical centers, all united by a shared commitment to advancing nursing research, evidence-based practice (EBP), and innovation to improve patient care and outcomes.
Several nurses from Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco represented the organization by presenting both podium and poster sessions, demonstrating the strength of frontline nursing leadership and scholarship. Medical-Surgical Clinical Nurse Christina Taylor, BSN, RN, MEDSURG-BC, and Clinical Adult Nursing Director Michelle McIlwain, MSN, MBA, APRN, FNP-BC, NEA-BC, presented findings from the multisite nursing research study The Clinic: An 8-Hour Resiliency Educational Workshop Centered on Jean Watson’s Caring Science Theory. Their presentation highlighted how structured resiliency education improved compassion satisfaction and reduced secondary traumatic stress among nurses, reinforcing the importance of caring science in nurse well-being and retention.
Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist Doanh Ly, DNP, RN, CNS, CCRN, SCRN, and Emergency Department Clinical Nurse Anahid Dalley, RN, shared results from their study Characteristics of Patients with Intracerebral Hemorrhage After Receiving Intravenous Tenecteplase for Acute Ischemic Stroke, highlighting the critical role of nursing assessment, early recognition, and blood pressure management in optimizing stroke care.
Poster presenters included Post-Anestheisa Care Unit (PACU) Clinical Nurse Maureen Crehan, RN, CAPA, CPAN, and Nurse Manager Rowena Guarino, BSN, RN, who presented Clinical Nurse Workflow Redesign in the PACU to Include Early Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Principles Leads to a Reduction in the Average Length of Stay for Patients Undergoing Total Hip Arthroplasty, and Medical-Surgical Clinical Nurses Becky Nguyen, RN, and Irma Hong, BSN, RN, and Nurse Manager Lilia Flores, BSN, RN who presented My Medication Matters, an interprofessional project that enhanced patient education and understanding of new medications.
Their collective contributions at the RIA Conference reflect Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco’s unwavering commitment to advancing nursing research, fostering collaboration, and translating evidence into practice — proving that innovation and excellence thrive when nurses lead the way.
