A new era in perioperative care: Introducing robotic surgery in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit

How the perioperative team united to launch a high-reliability robotic surgery program.

Kaiser Permanente Redwood City (KP RWC) achieved a major milestone with the successful launch of the first robotic surgery program in the ambulatory surgery unit (ASU), a transformational advancement in perioperative services. The program’s implementation represented a true interprofessional effort, requiring months of coordinated planning, equipment readiness, and comprehensive staff training across the entire surgical continuum.

Under the leadership of Perioperative Services Director Ria Domingo, MSN, RN, and ASU Nurse Manager Veronica Jeong, MSN, RN, the team brought together nurses, surgeons, anesthesiologists, sterile processing technicians, educators, and support staff to build a high-reliability robotics program from the ground up. Extensive education and training played a central role in the successful launch of the program.

Through simulations, hands-on learning, workflow redesign, and close collaboration with surgical partners, the perioperative team demonstrated exceptional adaptability, teamwork, and commitment to patient safety. Their collective efforts ensured that the program launched smoothly, meeting the highest standards of quality and creating new opportunities for minimally invasive care within our medical center.

The robotics rollout stands as a testament to what is possible when interdisciplinary teams unite under shared purpose, bringing advanced technology to the community while strengthening the culture of excellence that defines KP RWC nursing.
