On September 17, Kaiser Permanente Vacaville Medical Center was transformed into a place of enchantment. As part of Sepsis Awareness Month, the hospital embraced a Hogwarts-inspired theme to launch its Sepsis Awareness Campaign. Nurses and Sepsis Champions donned Sepsis Awareness shirts and Harry Potter cloaks, guiding a roving cart filled with educational materials, best practice alerts, and a spark of magical energy.
The cart became a symbol of connection, rolling through departments to engage staff in interactive education sessions, visual boards, and departmental “engagement spells.” Nursing participation was at the heart of the campaign. By leading discussions, answering questions, and reinforcing protocols, nurses turned routine reminders into memorable lessons. Their creativity and dedication ensured that awareness was not only raised but embedded into daily practice.
Behind the theme lay a serious mission: reinforcing the urgency of sepsis recognition and treatment. Kaiser Permanente Vacaville Medical Center’s Emergency Department and Inpatient Team are recognized as top performers in the region for sepsis care, with strong compliance to the sepsis bundle. These bundles—lactate measurement, blood cultures, immediate antibiotics, rapid IV fluids, and vasopressors when needed — are more than metrics. They are life-saving interventions that reduce mortality, shorten hospital stays, improve readmission rates, and standardize care across departments.
For patients, the campaign’s impact was profound. Early recognition and timely treatment meant lives saved and families reunited.
