Operating room nurse presents at the Marin Youth Health Forum

Cory Winther, BSN, RN, CNOR, staff nurse III creates a fun and interactive experience for Marin County High School students.

The Marin Youth Health Forum is a 1-day event in partnership with the Marin County Office of Education (MCOE) supported by Kaiser Permanente San Rafael Medical Center (KP SRF).  As a college and career readiness program, the forum consists of presentations by doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals from various departments in the KP SRF organization for high school students interested in learning about possible career paths and opportunities in healthcare.

The Marin Youth Health Forum reflects the core of population-health philosophy, where community partnership supports KP SRF’s population health priorities by addressing upstream social determinants of health including education, strengthening community trust and engagement; and inspiring the next-generation workforce. Introducing Marin County high school students to nursing and allied-health careers supports workforce pipeline development, diversity in healthcare professions, and long-term community representation.

On Nov. 19, 2025, Cory Winther, BSN, RN, CNOR, Staff Nurse III and Chair of the Professional Governance Coordinating/Oversight Council, volunteered to present at the Marin Youth Health Forum. Winther developed an interactive session that introduced students to the operating room (OR) nursing specialty and offered insight into what a typical day in the OR looks like. He created a PowerPoint presentation and brought a variety of OR equipment for a hands‑on “show and tell.” To make the experience even more engaging, Winther provided gowns, gloves, masks, and surgical caps so every high school student could practice donning and doffing surgical PPE. This fun, immersive activity offered students a realistic glimpse into the work of an OR nurse while highlighting sterility and infection‑prevention measures as essential components of safe surgical practice.
